Some intervals are written as beyond the octave (8th), e.g. 9th, 11th, 13th, etc. The intervals indicated here can be easily found out by subtracting 7 from the number give. The notation indicated that the the note can be found in the 2nd octave (or higher) by extending the scale beyond the octave containing the root note. This is a way of actually indicating to the player to add the higher pitched notes of the higher octaves. The chords using these notes are referred to as "extended chords." Other unindicated notes may also be a part of these chords.
