Chords in Music Theory
A "Chord" is a set of three (called a triad) or more individual notes that are played simultaneously.
Composition and Naming of Chords:
To make a chord one has to pick out a few notes from a particular scale. The chord will be named similar to the scale, after the its lowest note ("root note") and the rest of its composing note are indicated in the name as follows:
The root note is indicated below by the term "X". Ascending X chromatic scale is the chromatic scale starting at the X note and ending on the X note of the next octave going higher up in frequencies as the scale progresses.
Major Chords (triads):
Noted as "X"
Composed of 1st (root) + major 3rd + perfect 5th notes of X ascending chromatic scale.
(1 3 5)
Minor Chords (triads):Noted as "Xm" Composed of 1st + minor 3rd + perfect 5th notes, of X ascending chromatic scale.
(1 3b 5)
Augmented Chords (triads):
Noted as "X+" or "X aug"
Composed of 1st + major 3rd + augmented 5th notes, of X ascending chromatic scale.
(1 3 A5)
Diminished Chords (tetrads):
Noted as "Xo" or "X dim"
Composed of 1st + minor 3rd + diminished 5th notes, of X ascending chromatic scale.
(1 3b 5b)
