Chromatic scales are scales that contain all the notes of an octave in the order that they occur in the octave. Thus it contains all the notes of music. When the octave is divided into the standard 12 note (in 12-TET) the scales contain these 12 notes.
Ascending Chromatic Scale:
- When the notes are read from lower to higher pitch in the octave, the scale is ascending chromatic. Its is thus -
- A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G# A (one may start at any note - sharps and flats are written as sharps in all ascending scales including this one, i.e. where the frequency is rising from one note to the next.)
- Pattern of intervals between notes: 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1 (1 = half note)
- When the notes are read from higher to lower pitch in the octave, the scale is descending chromatic. Its is thus -
- A Ab G Gb F E Eb D Db C B Bb A (one may start at any note - sharps and flats are written as flats in all descending scales including this one, i.e. where the frequency is falling from one note to the next.)
- Pattern of intervals between notes: 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1
